Mission Statement

The Parish Family of St. Matthew, East Stroudsburg in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania and the Diocese of Scranton, endeavors to provide a welcoming environment to all. Guided by the Holy Spirit, through prayer and worship, and the sharing of our resources, we humbly strive to witness the Good News and to spread the Kingdom of God.

Parish History

The first Roman Catholic Church in the Stroudsburgs was a frame structure built at the corner of Brown and South Courtland streets on property donated by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. Traveling priests served until 1902 when Father Francis Craft, a convert, former soldier, surgeon and chaplain was appointed the first resident pastor.

Father John T. Butler, the second pastor, served until his death in 1943 when Father Harold Durkin became the third pastor. Monsignor Thomas Cawley was appointed as pastor in 1961 and served until his retirement in 1986.

Monsignor John A. Bergamo serves as our present pastor.
